Merlin

>_>

It only occured to me a few days ago that there is something odd about the fact that I love putting citites build on or around bridges in my fantasy... and I live in Edinburgh. Huh.

Thoughts on Merlin, with a SHINY SHINY QUESTION )

Oh Fudge!

YE GODS

So am I being a good girl and planning my classics essay. Said essay is on Greek Lyric Poetry. One of the fragments I was looking at mentioned something called 'Herotima', which I figured was either a place or a person. So, I Googled.

It asked me if I meant 'Herojima', but there was still one link that was about Anacreon (the poet).

And guess what.

Yes. Yes, that is a link to a TV Tropes page. No, I don't know either. But I feel like the world is telling me to go back to procrastinating... I'm just glad it's a quotes page not a trope page. ;_;
Going Mad

A List of Weird Things that have Happened

1. Last night I was in my room when one of my flatmates exclaimed 'that sounds like some kind of Czechoslovakian porn star!'. I did not hear the context.

2. Yesterday at the NaNo write-in, I was writing whilst half listening to the conversation. It was something to do with open relationships. Someone said 'so it means you can shag anyone you want!' and I said 'YAY!'. Everyone cracked up and started 'explaining what I had just yay'd'. I think they still don't believe me that I knew damn well what I was approving of. I REGRET NOTHING.

3. My NaNo spontaneously generated a new character. She is an ex-prostitute. This I regret.

4. The other night I came out of my room to brush my teeth and my flatmate came out of his room with that was either a very large bong or a giant candlestick. I can't help bu think the former is more likely. This explains a lot.

5. Me and [info]macey_muse and [info]gnimaerd and a girl I know from the NaNo write-ins are going to have a lesbian foursome. ;)

6. Talking about this in front of the one guy at the write-in was FUNNY.

7. I am now addicted to MLIA.

8. This list is seven items long.

Whaaaat whaaaaat where did she come from...

So my character has just arrived in 'London' (sort of), only to be promptly mugged by a knife-wielding young woman who ahs mistaken him for a rich newcomer.

She may well end up upcoming him on his quest somehow.

GET OUT OF MY NOVEL. IT IS NOT THAT KIND OF NOVEL. I DO NOT WANT A WISE-CRACKING SIDEKICK, LEAST OF ALL ONE WHO MAY FORCE HERSELF INTO THE ROLE OF LOVE INTEREST.

;_; I know it should be up to me, but she's too fun to write to waste on one scene.
Desperate Romantics

This is my Happy Icon

First off,

25K! HALFWAY POINT REACHED!

Also, today I finally plucked up the courage to read something out at Create Soc.
By which I mean I got [info]macey_muse to read it because she is a better reader than me and not at all shy.
By which I mean she read it while I stood outside so I couldn't hear.
By which I mean I fled to the other end of the corridor and occupied myself rearranging the spare pins on the noticeboard.
Because I could still hear her if I was too near the door.

CONFIDENCE FAIL. *facepalm*

Merlin in the hat

*shifty eyes*

I feel kind of bad taking books out the university library to research my NaNo when there are probably people who are actually studying Victorian history. But I don't have time to look through it right now, and it might not be here if I leave it...

Bah. I shall put it back my Wednesday. Fair?

(It's called Life in the Victorian Village: The Daily News Survey of 1891, btw.)

...I am going to have to look up Victorian London soon. Even though the capital city in Albon (the country wherein it is set) is quite definitely not London (different name and considerably further North).

Bah.

Re Merlin

I am not going to bother with a cut is all I want to say is: after watching this episode, I went and added entries for over at TV Tropes for Crowning Moment of Awesome and Crowning Moment of Heartwarming, and I am thinking I shall add entries for Tearjerker and Nightmare Fuel as well. \o/

EDIT: As of just now there are spoilers in the comments, btw.

Going Mad

;_;

I was coming out of the Pleasance when I saw a guy who looked a little like Santiago Cabera riding a bike.

I think he may have checked me out.

But alas he was on a bike and I was on foot so he just cycled away past the traffic lights.

Also I have a boyfriend.

CURSES.
Oh Fudge!

On Character Bashing and a Meme

I would just like to asser, due to some of the comments on this fic, that I have a lot of sympathy for Sophia, and that I disapprove of character bashing in all forms. It's just that, as far as I'm concerned, character-bashing is portraying a character in a negative light who is not portrayed as such in canon. And in canon... Sophia is a cold-hearted bitch. Possibly I went a bit OTT, but due to the nature of the fic it would be kind of hard to sympathise with Arthur and Merlin were she anything else.

And now, meme. Stolen from [info]acetamide.
The DVD Commentary Meme

Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection [Note: Please include the title/fandom & a link wouldn't be bad if it's something older]. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

(Preferably not anything in the 'old Merlin fic' folder in my memories, though, cause that stuff is like a year old and really shit.)

Chainsaws

Lolwut, Catullus

So I am doing the 'reading of the week' for one of my courses, and I just discovered that Catullus wrote a poem called 'Stop Stealing the Napkins!'.
Unfortunately it was not as amusing as it sounds:

Asinius Marrucinus, you don’t employ

your left hand too well: in wine and jest

you take neglected table-linen.

Do you think that’s witty? Get lost, you fool:

it’s such a sordid and such an unattractive thing.

Don’t you believe me? Believe Pollionus

your brother, who wishes your thefts

could be fixed by money: he’s a boy

truly stuffed with wit and humour.

So expect three hundred hendecasyllables

or return my napkin, whose value

doesn’t disturb me, truly,

it’s a remembrance of my friends.

Fabullus and Veranius sent me the gift,

napkins from Spain: they must be cherished

as my Veranius and Fabullus must be.

He also refers to his girlfriend as 'Lesbia'. My lecturer says that is is a reference to Sappho, and thus is saying that she is very intelligent and talented, and also that Lesbian women (ie women from Lesbos) were famed for their beauty.
According to a book I read last week, they were also famed for 'sexual inventiveness'. Ha.

We also learned all about the utter bizarreness of Lesbia's family. One of the clues as to who she actually was is that she might have been accused of incest. She may also have been a woman who (possibly) poisoned her husband, then took a lover, then fell out with said lover, and accused him of poisoning her. Then... yeah.

There also appears to be a lot of poems about buttsex.

Rain

My Icon is Indicative of the Weather

So, here's the thing I forbgot to put in my post about halloween:

Last night, I went out with some girls who live in the building opposite (thus I met them just outside) and a girl who lives further away. Thus we met her on the Royal Mile.
But once she arrived, we couldn't find her. Even though she texted us to say she'd just walked right past where we were standing, we couldn't find her. We just didn't see her at all. Eventually my friend got her on the phone and tried to direct her to us, but it took forever... then once she showed up my friend had walked away to see if she could see her coming from the other direction, and didn't realise she was there. So, basically, we couldn't find her for ages.
And guess who she was dressed up as.

Carmen Sandiego. I kid you not. xD

The Most Awesome Thing

So I made a point of coming back early tonight so I could start NaNoWriMo at midnight, but then something happened that was so awesome that it distracted me.
When I came back I had three emails, that were all comments of my LJ entries from the same person. I figured they'd just commented on multiple fics, as happens sometimes, BUT NO. Someone wrote me a review so long that it spanned three comments!

AND THAT IS NOT THE BEST PART.

WHYYYYYY

So I am trying to download Merlin on BBC iPlayer. Usually I use the 'download to windows media player' option, because it tends to freeze when I stream it, and for some reason the normal download doesn't work, like, at all.

And yet for some reason, this week, for the first time, Merlin isn't available on alternate download.

;___;

I don't suppose anyone has any idea why I can't use the regular download service. >_>

AVPM

On a lighter note...

...Last night I learned that jokingly saying to a guy that you and a friend are going to go home and have 'hot lesbian sex' actually gets a response.
Joy! : D

Oh Fudge!

Gah

So apparently there's an episode of Buffy in which the day is saved by Willow translating an ancient Etruscan text.

I have been studying classics for all of a month and already I know that the longest surviving Etruscan text is about a thousand words long and is a religious text (ie nothing to do with magic). Other than that there's nothing over a few hundred words. And no surviving literature.

;_;
